How to choose a wedding photographer

Planning a wedding involves a lot of decision-making, and one of the most important ones is selecting the right wedding photographer to capture your big day. Your wedding day goes quickly (ask any wedding couple!) and your photos will serve as the best reminder of the memories you make on the day. So, it’s crucial to choose a wedding photographer who understands your vision and can deliver the results you expect.

To help you navigate this decision in between all the others you need to make ahead of your big day, here are some of the biggest factors to keep in mind when deciding how to choose a wedding photographer.

What to look for in a wedding photographer

1. Depth of experience

An experienced wedding photographer has the knowledge and skills to handle various lighting conditions, capture candid moments and ensure that every detail is beautifully documented. They know the timings of the day, including sunrise and sunset times (yes, sunrise weddings are a thing!), as well as how to plan a run sheet around getting the best light for your photos. We’ve all heard of ‘golden hour’ and if you’re set on having the golden hues of sunset feature in your photos, a wedding photographer who knows how to plan around this is a good one to consider.

2. Style and flair

Every photographer has a unique style, so it’s important to find one whose artistic approach aligns with your own. Do you prefer a classic and timeless style with posed shots or a more creative and contemporary one that showcases candid storytelling? Look through the photographers’ portfolios online and on social media to get a sense of their aesthetic and what resonates with you.

3. Personality

Your wedding day is one of the most intimate and emotional occasions you’re likely to experience in life. So choosing a wedding photographer whose personality puts you at ease is important. A friendly and professional photographer will help you feel comfortable in front of the camera, resulting in more natural and authentic photos. Having a chat on the phone when enquiring about photographic packages is a great way to get to know each other. Getting an understanding of each other’s personalities ahead of your wedding day often makes a big difference in how you enjoy your day.

4. Understand the investment you’re making

Choose a wedding photographer you have confidence in as there’s no way to recreate your special day. Established photographers who are highly sought after often charge between $3000-$6000 – there’s a reason for the saying ‘you get what you pay for’! Some couples may consider using a friend, family member or student to capture their day. Keep in mind their work may not match a pro’s and neither should you expect this of them. Professional wedding photographers on the other hand charge for their expertise, and quality equipment, skills and services. When looking for a wedding photographer, particular qualities can make a big difference in the outcome of your wedding photos. Let’s face it, most of us only plan on getting married once!

5. It’s all in the details

Take the time to understand the photographers’ offerings to avoid hiring someone who doesn’t meet your needs for the day. Some wedding photographers don’t include digital images in their photo packages, offering proof sheets for you to choose and purchase from instead. Also, check the hours that are included in the wedding photography package. For example, some photographers may cover your whole day, from bride prep, all the way through reception, or they may only cover the ceremony, family shots and one location shoot. Ask yourself if you want a solo photographer, or if you want somebody who offers a second photographer to cover different aspects of the day (for example, one photographer would photograph the bride prep, while the second photographer covers the groom prep). Some wedding photographers also partner with other suppliers, like wedding videographers, often meaning there is value in booking two suppliers as a package. If you’re not sure what is exactly included in the photographer’s packages, ask for clarity to decide confidently.

6. Do your research

When embarking on the all-important search for your wedding photographer, take the time to explore your options. Compile a shortlist of your top choices and reach out to them to confirm their availability for your selected date. Once you’ve verified their availability, delve into their client reviews and testimonials. Most photographers present their portfolios on their website, blog and social media channels like Facebook and Instagram (you’ll also get some insights into their daily activities too!) Additionally, it’s wise to verify any awards and memberships (like ABIA-accredited wedding photographers, like myself) they may claim.

7. Trust your gut

At the end of the day, this is YOUR wedding and what matters most is that you’re over the moon with the wedding photographer you choose. Go with your instincts, think about all the points above and make a choice that truly lights you and your partner up. Take your time to decide, but don’t take forever – the really awesome wedding photographers tend to get booked up pretty quickly! Good luck with your search.
